Israeli soldier visits Beachwood Agnon School

Israeli soldier visits Beachwood Agnon School, By Sun News staff, 03/28/10

A soldier from the Israeli Defense Forces in Israel visited the Agnon School in Beachwood to teach the students about IDF and more than 5000 other soldiers who are a part of the group.

Agnon students learned about the Israeli Defense Forces through a recent visit from an Israeli Sergeant named Jay, also known as a “lone” soldier, someone who serves in the Israeli army, but has no immediate family living in Israel. There are over 5,000 lone soldiers from several countries in the IDF.

Sergeant Jay spoke about his decision to move to Israel from the United States and join the Israeli army. In addition, he shared stories and images from a book, “Lone Soldiers: Israel’s Defenders from Around the World,” by Jerusalem Post diplomatic correspondent Herb Keinon, which tells the personal stories of 14 volunteer lone soldiers in the IDF.

Several eighth-graders met Sergeant Jay, who said the Agnon students “are enthusiastic about school and learning in a way I cannot remember ever seeing.”

Pre-kindergarten students Guy Levi of University Heights and Gavin Smith of Chardon were very excited to meet Sergeant Jay.

Agnon parent Shari Goldberg met Sergeant Jay last summer in Jerusalem as part of a tour group and invited him to visit Agnon.
