Kindergarten – 8th Grade
2010 Winter Session #3
The Agnon School offers after-school activities for Kindergarten through 8th grade students beginning in January. To register, please complete the enclosed “Sign Up Sheet” and return it to Jenny in the school office. Payment must accompany your registration. You may pay by cash, check or credit card. Class sizes are limited so sign up as soon as possible! Once a class reaches its maximum registration, a waiting list will be started.
Please keep a copy of this After School Activity listing so you will know the dates and times of the classes that you have registered for. You will NOT receive a confirmation of your enrollment; however, you will be notified if you were closed out of a class.
Agnon has a financial responsibility to our instructors that we must commit to prior to the first week of the activity. Because of this financial commitment, the following policy is in effect for all after school activities: 1) if a student withdraws from a program any time after registering, through the first week of the program, you are responsible for paying 25% of the cost of the program, 2) if a student withdraws from a program any time after the first week, you are obligated to pay 100% of the cost of the program. Instructors are not responsible for students after the class ends. Please plan on picking students up at the stated ending time of class. Children who are not picked up will be placed in after-care. Cooking with Toni – K-4
This cooking class will focus on learning cooking terms, recipe preparation and other important aspects of cooking and culinary skills. It will also incorporate nutrition, reading, math, and of course…fun!We will be making main dishes and desserts. The best part is that the chefs will bring home what they cook! Laws of kashruth observed. Please list any allergies on sign-up sheet!

Creative Minds – K- 2 All New Crafts!!
In this class you will have the opportunity to create decoupage art, mosaics, canvas paintings, collages, hand-made soaps and more! Come ready to have fun, create new things and meet new friends!! All your supplies are included. This class is taught by Shaina Kirschenbaum, a kindergarten teacher at The Agnon School. Shaina loves to do arts and crafts projects. She is excited to share her hobby and love for being creative with your children.

CHESS (grades 1-8)
“Progress With Chess”, led by 2003 Ohio champion Michael Joelson, who conducts chess programs in over 25 Cleveland area schools. They will provide experienced instructors who possess patience and teaching skills in addition to being accomplished tournament players. Beginning students will learn the rules and how the pieces move. More advanced students will be taught basic principles, tactics, and checkmate patterns in a supportive setting. There will be ample time for supervised open play. All levels and abilities are welcome.

ICE SKATING (grades 3-8)
Join your friends on the ice at “Gilmour Academy’s Learn to Skate”. The program includes 8 weeks of one-hour classes available at all skill levels. The first 20 minutes are open skate time and the remaining 40 minutes are spent in group lessons. Skates are provided at no additional cost. It is suggested that skaters wear warm comfortable clothing. All students are required to bring a bicycle helmet with them to all sessions.
Gilmour will provide a bus to transport our students to the ice arena for a fee. We will not be sending Agnon staff on the bus, however, Gilmour will provide a bus monitor to be sure the students arrive safely and join the appropriate group. If you prefer, you may drive your own child to Gilmour. When you register, please indicate if you will be using Gilmour’s transportation. Either way, you will need to pick your child up from the ice arena at 5 p.m.

Agnon Coin Collectors Club – Grades 2 – 8
This club will investigate and explore U.S. coins and currency from the young, novice collector’s viewpoint. Possible topics will include colonial currency and coinage, decimal coinage, fractional coinage, mint marks and the mint systems, value, specials and history to name a few.
Gary is an avid collector of coins, bullion and currency for over 30 years. He professionally appraises and advises clients daily regarding numismatic collections and the current metals market. He has been a guest appraiser for the Antiques Road Show concentrating on vintage jewelry and pocket watches. He is a Cleveland State University graduate as well as a graduate of the Geological Institute of America.
This class will be held on a drop-in basis. Students must have a note from their parents to stay for the class.

Knitting Class (Grades 3 – 6)
Susan Beamish is an Agnon middle school teacher who knits for fun. Students will learn the basics skills of knitting including casting on, the knit and purl stitches, and binding off. These skills will allow students to complete a large variety of projects for themselves, friends, and family.
A second class will be start on Thursday if necessary.
Susan will contact students before the first class with a list of supplies that they will need.

Babysitting Class – Grades 5 – 8
Nanci Miklowski is an experienced babysitter of 15 years. This will be her second workshop from which the participants will learn responses to emergency situations, the administration of common First Aid procedures,and appropriate interaction with different age levels (includes changing diapers). They will learn how to present themselves professionally, plus many strategies and games.

Clay Explorations (Grades 2-6)
Immerse yourself in clay – at least immerse your hands! In this class, we will explore a variety of hand-building techniques as we create our sculptures. Projects will include a face mug, a ceramic hamsa as well as other individual projects.
